More Very Important Stuff!
I have a lot to cover so I hope you will
bear with me. First and most important is give our greatest thanks to those
of you who made the 1996 Auto Jumble a huge success. Mop constructed a
nice awning for the registration area and we had several compliments about
the use of a sound system instead of a megaphone! A surprising low number
of out of towners showed up but the locals were out in good force, especially
the Austin-Healey group. The display of new vehicles garnered the most
compliments though, and everyone loved the double decker bus. I hope those
guys meet with success in their inner city ministry.
Congratulations to Tom Smith who took best of show this year.
Tom and Cindy both took second place in their respective classes at the
Jaguar Concours in Louisville the weekend before our show. This was our
first time at a national event and it was an experience to say the least.
It certainly
supported my faith in the people’s choice method of decision making.
Holding the show in the infield of the Churchill Downs racetrack while
there was horse racing going on around us was very unique.
My brother and I decided the scientific approach to betting is definitely
not the way to do it. Tom and his son Whitt, as well as Cindy and Suzy
did much better betting on the horses with the names they liked!
Beginning with this issue, we are going to experiment with two new areas
of interest. First we will try a tech column. Write, phone or E-mail your
tech problem or questions to us and we will do our best to come up with
a believable answer. Of course, we’re talking British Car tech problems
here so no BSA alternator timing questions or other such nonsense! Second,
we are
going to review events that we have participated in and we want you
to help. If you go to an event, local or not, let us know about it. You
can write a column or just call me with the gory details. Wild horses couldn’t
get me to “dis” you to the “posers” if you wish to remain anonymous. Above
is a brief review of Louisville and elsewhere Priscilla reviews Indy’96.
Page 8 has our first tech column. Let us know what you think. Finally,
the July Issue of Consumer Reports has an extensive test on engine oils
and additives. I recommend you read this yourself so you can fully digest
all that they went through to come up with their findings. The gist of
the article states “no meaningful differences were found when oil was changed
at 3000 miles rather than 6000 miles. In our tests, oil brand didn’t matter
much as long as the oil carried the industry’s starburst symbol.” They
went on to say that synthetic oils and oil additives added “no discernible
benefits”. The article is good reading to help understand how they came
to their conclusions. Check it out.
