Partition Magic 3:
PM 3 (in short) makes fdisk & format operations (simple) ex: like creating and
deleting
partitions BUT (PM 3) goes on with procedures that you can't do with either of the
dos/windows utilities like moving, resizing and organizing data to save space and protect
it. I
may bore you with different scenario's of what this great utility will do, but after you
buy, beg or
borrow it and install it, drop in a floppy and copy ( partinfo.exe ) to it and if your not
having fun
then (below).
At the (A) prompt type: partinfo.exe A:\>partinfo.txt and send that TEXT file to me
(via E-Mail) with exactly what your trying to do and/or want.
FIRST, one of the things that's mis-understood was when (after making the partitions) you
ran out of room in a partition and tried to re-size the (C:) drive partition and couldn't
and it
wouldn't allow you to. Needless to say, the book might be abit vague.
To enlarge a partition when you haven't any free space and everything I'm explaining has
been done by me with NO DATA loose. Another option is to move your partition to one that's
as large or larger, You have to have the gray free space just to the right of the
partition that you want to enlarge.
So make that partition smaller that's next door or you have to go to the end and delete
one so you can get that free space.
Next, you have to move the other partitions one by one from right to the left till you get
to the one you want larger.
Understanding Drive Letter assignment:
So, if there are two physical hard drives each divided into 3 logical partitions the order
of assigned drive letters will be the following:
C: primary partition on drive 1
D: primary partition on drive 2
E: first logical drive in the extended partition of drive 1
F: second logical drive in the extended partition of drive 1
G: first logical drive in the extended partition of drive 2
H: second logical drive in the extended partition of drive 2
Note: the second physical hard disk does not need to have a primary partition. If the
second hard disk only contains logical drives in the extended partition, the drive letters
will be assigned as follows:
C: primary partition on drive 1
D: first logical drive in the extended partition of drive 1
E: second logical drive in the extended partition of drive 1
F: first logical drive in the extended partition of drive 2
G: second logical drive in the extended partition of drive 2
H: third logical drive in the extended partition of drive 2
I: will be your CD drive
Note: PM 3 running 3 OS's on 2 physical drives:
C: 3 primarys partitions with 2 hidden first of drive 1
D: the fourth primary but first primary partition of drive 2
E: first logical drive in the extended partition of drive 1
F: second logical drive in the extended partition of drive 1
G: first logical drive in the extended partition of drive 2
H: will be your CD drive
If your having trouble with remembering your CD letter:
Changing Drive letters:
Right click on My Computer and select properties. This will bring up the System properties
window. Select the device manager tab at the top. Find the CD-ROM device and double click
on it. A property sheet should open and let you set the range of letters available for the
drive. Just put in the desired letter.
I'll be adding things here as I have time so if you have any suggestions or
questions---send mail.
